Rare 1930s Herbert Terry Anglepoise 1227 Floor Lamp

An exceptionally rare early 1930s Herbert Terry 1227 floor-standing Anglepoise lamp. Genuine 1227 floor examples are seldom seen, as most surviving floor lamps are later adaptations of the 1209. This early piece features the scarce three-part fork (pre-dating the later one-piece cast versions), a centre section stamped Pats Pending / 90/35, and no compulsory earthing screw, all pointing to its early manufacture.

The base is stamped P.C.L (C.J. Plucknett & Co Ltd), known suppliers to the medical and dental industries, research suggests that P.C.L would purchase the main 1227 assembly from HT&S and professionally modify for use in the medical practice. Complete with its original Crabtree Bakelite lampholder — a remarkable and highly collectable survivor.

Condition Report

The lamp is excellent original condition. As seen in photos, the lamp shows marks, small chips and dents consistent with its age and decades of practical use, particularly to the lamp base. These are all in keeping with a 95-year-old piece of lighting history and in our opinion, do not detract at all from the lamps appeal. It has been lightly cleaned and sympathetically rewired with braided flex cable, retaining its original character and presence.

All of our items are genuine original pieces and as such will show signs of age and use. We believe these signs of wear — from patina to minor imperfections — are part of each item's story and character. While we restore, clean and check every piece to ensure it’s ready for many more years of use, we don't over-restore or attempt to erase its history.
