Hans J. Wegner J16 Rocking Chair for FDB Møbler, 1977

An original J16 rocking chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner for FDB Møbler in 1944 and manufactured in Denmark in 1977.

One of Wegner’s best-known early designs, the J16 features a tall spindle back, gently curved armrests and long solid wood rockers, with a traditional woven paper cord seat. The chair combines influences from traditional Windsor and Shaker furniture with the clean, functional approach that became synonymous with post-war Danish design.

This example is an original FDB Møbler production, constructed in beech with a natural finish and retaining its woven paper cord seat. Clearly impressed beneath the arm with the original FDB maker’s mark, ‘MADE IN DENMARK’ and 1977 production stamp.

The J16 has remained in production in various forms since its introduction, making the dated FDB stamp particularly useful in identifying this as a genuine vintage Danish example rather than a later production.

Condition Report

In excellent vintage condition. The beech frame remains very clean throughout with only light marks and signs of use commensurate with age. There is a small chip to the edge of one armrest, as pictured. The woven paper cord seat is also in excellent condition with no notable damage. Structurally solid and rocks smoothly.
