Herbert Terry & Sons 1227 Anglepoise Lamp with Rare Bakelite Shade c.1940s

An early Herbert Terry 1227 Anglepoise lamp, featuring its original and rare rolled-rim Bakelite shade and matching Crabtree bulb holder. Produced during the interwar and early post-war years, when Bakelite was used due to metal shortages, very few of these fragile shades have survived. This example retains all hallmark early 1227 features — including the taller ‘tuning fork’ support, side-exit cable holes on the elbow, and cone-top fixed tension springs — making it a highly collectible and authentic piece of British design history.

Product Code: IAS12

Condition Report

This 1227 is in excellent original condition. The black base and arms display just the right amount of gentle wear consistent with age and use. The Bakelite shade is in excellent condition, showing only a very small, barely noticeable crack at the bottom, which has no impact on the lamp’s stability or function. The lamp has been fully disassembled, carefully cleaned, and rewired with black flex cable.

All of our items are genuine original pieces and as such will show signs of age and use. We believe these signs of wear — from patina to minor imperfections — are part of each item's story and character. While we restore, clean and check every piece to ensure it’s ready for many more years of use, we don't over-restore or attempt to erase its history. If you’d like more details about a specific item’s condition, feel free to get in touch — we’re always happy to help.
