J. Sanderson & Son ‘New Image’ 42-Piece Cutlery Set by C. Melville Cass, c.1960s

A complete 42-piece, six-place setting of J. Sanderson & Son’s ‘New Image’ cutlery, designed by British cutlery designer Charles Melville Cass.

Designed in 1959 and introduced at the beginning of the 1960s, ‘New Image’ formed part of a new generation of British tableware which moved away from traditional silver-plated cutlery in favour of stainless steel, synthetic materials and clean, modern forms.

Cass’s design combines satin-finished stainless steel with distinctive tapered black nylon handles, creating a particularly strong example of early 1960s British modernism.

The ‘New Image’ range received recognition from the Council of Industrial Design and examples were documented as part of its promotion of progressive British industrial design during the period.

The set comprises 42 pieces / six complete place settings, with six each of seven different utensils.

Condition Report

Very good vintage condition overall. The stainless steel shows light surface scratching and marks consistent with age and use. The black nylon handles remain in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. No major damage or losses. The set has been cleaned and is ready for use.
