Hans J. Wegner CH07 ‘Shell’ Chairs for Carl Hansen & Søn

An iconic and instantly recognisable design by Hans J. Wegner, originally introduced in 1963. The CH07 ‘Shell’ chair was considered hugely avant-garde when first launched, resulting in very limited early production before later becoming one of Wegner’s most celebrated and sought-after designs.  

This matching pair are later productions by Carl Hansen & Søn, crafted in walnut veneer with a warm, rich tone throughout and upholstered in cognac leather, believed to be Thor 307. The sculptural three-leg form gives the chairs an almost floating appearance, while still being incredibly comfortable and practical. A real statement piece from every angle, showcasing Wegner’s ability to combine organic lines with exceptional craftsmanship.

Retaining original Carl Hansen & Søn labels to the underside. A beautiful and increasingly collectible piece of Danish design history.

Condition Report

Both chairs are in excellent overall condition and have clearly been well cared for over the years. The leather upholstery is in good condition throughout. There are some light marks and scratches to the walnut veneer, as shown in the photos, commensurate with age and use. These are relatively minor and do not detract from the overall look or presence of the chairs in our opinion. A really clean and well-presented pair overall.

All of our items are genuine original pieces and as such will show signs of age and use. We believe these signs of wear — from patina to minor imperfections — are part of each item's story and character. While we restore, clean and check every piece to ensure it’s ready for many more years of use, we don't over-restore or attempt to erase its history.
